“I want to learn how to use my camera… Properly” is a statement we hear from people time and time again. How do I learn my camera? Is another – Our reply at Welshot is always the same. Practice, practice, practice, practice some more and practice again. According to Malcolm Gladwell’s blockbuster book ‘Outliers’ it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert at anything. That’s about 10 years of intensive practice to achieve mastery of any subject and here at Welshot we know, without a doubt, the people who get the best from their camera(s) are the ones that put the most time and effort into learning the art of photography.

Hashtag #WelshotIsBack seems a very apt way to title this very first blog written by Welshot Academy Members to celebrate being able to meet up with our cameras after months of lockdown… As life returns to a more relative sense of normality, Welshot are preparing to open up once again for photographic workshops and events in a slow and cautious manner. Hence the three ‘practice run-throughs’ – AKA… A Welshot Photographic Reunion. Since March 2020, when the pandemic hit, Welshot has continued to help motivate, inspire and support those who love photography during these isolating months, all brought together using hashtags #LearnWithWelshot and #WelshotOnline but nothing quite compares to being able to hold our photographic workshops and events in real life.

The Welshot ‘Trash the Dress’ event on Saturday was somewhat different from most Welshot events. Firstly, it was an event where some new techniques were being tried out including paint, smoke and paint powder – and it wasn’t certain how different things would work. Secondly, because we were using paint, smoke and paint powder it was necessary for everyone to take photographs at the same time – which meant that the models couldn’t concentrate on a single person doing the shooting. Thirdly, several Welshot team leaders were taking part and shooting alongside others for the event rather than checking that everyone was using sensible settings and getting the shots that they wanted.

After the success of the 2019 “Shortest Night” we will, once again, be running this, not so short, non-stop night of photography. Circumnavigating Anglesey and Snowdonia” – starting in Llanberis with a picnic supper in the evening and finishing at breakfast, both of which are included in the cost of this event. Shooting for nearly 15 hours solid. Most of the 2019 delegates are already pre-booked onto this event so spaces are already limited.
