Working with Models
Shooting with Gels using Mains Studio & Off Camera Flash – Chester Photographic Academy Evening
The key to successful coloured gel photography is experimentation and at this Welshot Photographic Academy Evening in Chester you will have the time to test different combinations, understand the impact of each gel, and refine your technique to achieve the desired results. With the help, support and guidance of our team of expert lighting technicians and photographers you will be shown how understanding the colour temperature of your light source is crucial when using gels. Different gels have specific colour temperatures, and combining them with the existing lighting conditions can produce unique effects. With our patient and experienced models you will have the time to learn how the placement of your gel in front of the light source determines the way the coloured light falls on your subject. This photography session will be studio based as well as on location in and around the hotel using off camera flash.
How to Work With A Model – Everything You Need to Know – From the planning, to the shooting, to making perfect photos.
Whether you are a photographer wanting to undertake a photo-shoot with a professional model or a photographer wanting to capture a family portrait, the challenges in photographing your model(s) can vary based on the specific circumstances of the shoot and the dynamics between you and your model(s). Overcoming these challenges requires a combination of technical proficiency, interpersonal skills, and creative vision.
We have so much more planned for the photographer wanting to build a portfolio. I am very excited for our “Denim & Diamonds” event which is going to be in an old cotton mill near Rochdale, Manchester – Sustainable costumes are being made specifically for this event and as Welshot is an ethical company, Team Creative are making a range of edgy, cool and funky outfits from recycled jeans and other materials.

You will be creating five completely different looks from your model(s) using a wide variety of photographic and lighting techniques. From creating silhouettes to using gels. From shooting in black and white to creating bokeh in your portraits to using a single light – the only limiting factor will be your creativity. We will be using props such as car windows, guitars, mirrors, hats and scarves and you will even learn how to use the surroundings around as your background to your advantage. Studio mains flash, off camera flash and natural light will, again, help you to create differing looks to your photographs. Using shadows, natural and created in the studio will also help you to be creative and think outside the box while you make some really effective images.
