Chester After Dark – Low-Light, Long Exposure & Creative Night Photography Workshop

Chester After Dark – Low-Light, Long Exposure & Creative Night Photography Workshop
Discover Chester in a different Light
As daylight fades and the city lights begin to glow, Chester takes on a completely different character. Historic buildings become illuminated, shadows grow longer, reflections appear in unexpected places and familiar streets offer exciting new photographic possibilities.
Join the Welshot Photographic Academy for a practical afternoon and evening photography workshop in Chester, where we’ll explore low-light photography, long exposures, blue-hour techniques and creative ways to photograph the city after dark.
If you’ve ever struggled with blurry night photographs, confusing camera settings or getting the exposure just right, this workshop is designed to help you understand what your camera is doing and how to take greater creative control.
With demonstrations, individual guidance and plenty of opportunities to experiment, you’ll develop the confidence to photograph in challenging lighting conditions and discover just how rewarding night photography can be.

What Will You Learn?
Working with Eifion, we’ll explore the practical skills and creative techniques needed to make the most of low-light conditions.
You’ll learn about:
- Exposure after dark:
Understanding aperture, shutter speed and ISO, and how they work together. - Blue-hour photography:
Capturing the balance between natural twilight and artificial lighting. - Long exposures:
Using slower shutter speeds to capture movement, light trails and atmospheric scenes. - Keeping photographs sharp:
Using a tripod, manual focusing techniques and suitable shutter-release methods. - White balance and colour:
Understanding how streetlights and different light sources influence your photographs. - Creative composition:
Using illuminated buildings, reflections, shadows, leading lines and architectural details. - Exposure troubleshooting:
Recognising and correcting common problems with night photography.
You will finish the workshop knowing how to expose, focus and stabilise your camera for low-light photography, and understand how to experiment with longer shutter speeds. Throughout the workshop, you’ll be encouraged to experiment with your camera settings and explore different approaches to photographing the same scene.
From Daylight to Darkness
We’ll begin during daylight, allowing time to explore our surroundings, discuss camera settings and practise the techniques we’ll use as the light changes. As the afternoon progresses, we’ll work with the softer light of dusk before moving into blue-hour and night photography.
Chester’s historic streets, distinctive architecture and illuminated landmarks provide a wonderful setting for experimenting with different exposures, compositions and creative techniques.
We’ll also explore how movement, reflections and contrasting light can add atmosphere and interest to our images.

Who Is This Workshop For?
This workshop is ideal for photographers who want to develop their technical skills and become more confident photographing in low-light conditions. Previous night photography experience isn’t necessary, although some familiarity with your camera’s controls will be helpful.
Whether you’ve recently started experimenting with manual settings or simply want to improve your existing night photographs, you’ll receive practical guidance and individual support.
