At Welshot

Knowing your model is an important part of your photo-shoot!

Making great images that have that WOW factor can really only be achieved if you have a great rapport with your Model, and an understanding of how he, or she works best. This genre of photography is a collaborative process, and building a relationship with your Model fosters a positive working environment. Collaboration can lead to better ideas, improved creativity, and a more enjoyable experience for both the photographer and the model.

By establishing trust you will build the rapport needed to create a sense of trust and comfort. This is crucial for capturing natural and authentic expressions, as a relaxed and comfortable model is more likely to open up in front of the camera.

At Welshot, we do the hard work for you – We get to know our Models first, before we introduce them to you, the photographer. We make sure the Models we bring to Welshot are going to be the right fit – for them, for us, for you!

This is a new blog series where we introduce you to the Models we will be bringing to our new range of photographic events for those photographers who are wanting to take photos for camera club competitions, serious about their own personal continued professional development and building a photographic portfolio.

Introducing Sin Yu Chan

Hi everyone. My name is Sin Yu. ‘Sin Yu’ means ‘Eternal Kindness’ in Chinese. I am originally from Hong Kong. I am currently a professional fashion model and stylist based in London. My exclusive and signature brand is ‘Styled by Me. Modelled by Me’, a 2-in-1 professional modelling and fashion styling photoshoot service.

I am known among photographers for my strong and unique wardrobe collection. I offer outfits from global brands and designers, studio collection items from local high street fashion retailers, even a few self-designed pieces. Please visit my website or PurplePort portfolio for previous examples of my ‘Styled by Me. Modelled by Me’ work. I strongly believe ‘Styled by Me. Modelled by Me’ guarantees to showcase something different and cannot be replicated by any other model.

I hope you love my outfits as much as I do.

We asked Sin Yu:

How did you get started in your modelling career?

As ridiculous as it sounds, I started modelling because I wanted to become more desirable as a person. I used modelling as an excuse to glow up and dress up, and a way to make myself look impressive.

Your career so far – How long have you been modelling full-time, professionally?  Any other jobs within the industry?

This is my third year professionally modelling.

In addition, I do supporting artist or background extra work for TV and film to fill in empty dates.

What do you think your greatest achievement has been so far?

Launching ‘Styled by Me. Modelled by Me’ is my greatest achievement.

It is the moment I believe I found my identity or unique edge as a model.

If you could say just one thing to a photographer, what would you say?

“I am sorry if I am slow to understand banter sometimes.”

I am not originally from here after all. When I first came to UK I didn’t even know what a ‘Quid’ was.

On location (outside) or studio?

Studio will always be the most comfortable environment.

However, I do enjoy a location shoot if the background serves a purpose (and lovely weather, of course).

Favourite snack?

There is a red date and walnut candy I can only find in Hong Kong I am absolutely addicted to.

I am waiting for my mum to send over a new batch.

What would your dream shoot look like?

A classic studio editorial fashion shoot where I get to wear big and bold Haute Couture garments I can never dream to afford.

Having hot food for lunch is a bonus.

If you could give one bit of advice to a dancer/model just starting out what would it be?

Modelling is an art.

More importantly, it is a business. Remember that. You must manage it and treat it as such.

Everything you do, the way you carry yourself, package yourself and market yourself, is a representation of your brand.

Sweet or savoury?

Savoury. I survive on ramen noodles.

Six people you’d love to have around the dinner table (past, present or future) and if possible, why?

I actually have no idea.

I may have nominees to have dinner with separately. However, I am not sure if they will get along well together. I am in this country by myself as well. It is very difficult to say.

Annie Leibovitz or Mario Testino?

Is it a bad thing I do not know either of them?

Back of the camera images, Yes or No?  (Do you like to be shown them?)

Of course. I always like to have a look at the progress and make changes if necessary.

Having said that, I usually only spot details or have specific opinions when I view the images on my laptop (when I can really zoom in).

Video or Still’s?

Stills. Videos are lovely but they are much more challenging and exhausting to perfect.
