Building a Photographic Portfolio & Continued Professional Development
What does “Building a Portfolio” and “Continued Professional Development” mean to you?
To us, at Welshot, “Building a Portfolio” means creating a body of work, whether printed, or in digital format, of the photographs you make, no matter the genre of photography.
It is a record of your own photographic journey.
A way for you to see how far you’ve come, how much you’ve learnt and how your style has evolved.
It’s Personal!
Building a portfolio is personal.
- It can be a just for you project that continues to challenge you to learn more – from making an image to the editing.
- It can be used to showcase your work to a wider audience, especially if you want photography to be a thing you make money from.
- It can be used to keep a record for family and friends, or just so you can share your work on the worldwide web with other like-minded people who love photography!
- If you are a camera club member who enters competitions or national and international salons – your portfolio could be your archive of images which may be used in the future.
Building a photographic portfolio is unique to you! There is no right way, no wrong way – every person who picks up a camera has a different reason for wanting to take pictures.
It’s the same for “Continued Professional Development” – it’s personal, it’s unique to you. You don’t need to be a professional to want to develop your skills, you just need to have the drive, the ambition, the determination and the get-up-and-go to want to learn your craft – for whatever reasons!
There’s a well known quote – “The only person you should compare yourself to is the person that you were yesterday”.
It is about your progress.
Make YOUR learning a priority
You’ve invested a lot of money into your camera, your lenses, maybe you’ve even invested in lighting equipment and all manner or photographic kit but it’s no use if you’ve not invested in yourself!
Investing in your learning is one of the most valuable things you can do.
Any photographic learning you do, will NEVER be wasted! All photographic learning is transferable, regardless of genre!
